After my aunt passed away, I volunteered to clean her house.
No one wanted the job.
Every room felt untouched.
Like time had simply...
Stopped.
Most of what I found was ordinary.
Old sweaters.
Family photos.
Boxes of holiday decorations.
Then I opened the bedroom closet.
Hidden behind a stack of blankets...
Was a small wooden box.
Inside were birthday cards.
Dozens of them.
Each one sealed.
Each one had my name on it.
I smiled.
Until I noticed the dates.
My smile disappeared.
The first card was meant for my 10th birthday.
The next...
My 11th.
Then my 12th.
Every birthday...
All the way to my 30th.
My hands started shaking.
She had written them years in advance.
Why?
I opened the first one.
Inside...
Only one sentence.
"If you're reading this, I kept my promise."
I froze.
Promise?
What promise?
Every card contained another clue.
Another memory.
Another secret.
Then I opened the final envelope.
The last line changed everything.
"Your mother never wanted you to know... but I couldn't let the truth disappear with me."
